How to Block TikTok on iPhone (and Make It Stick)

Short answer
To block TikTok on iPhone, use Screen Time: a Time Allowance or Screen Time Schedule on iOS 27, or App Limits and Block at Downtime on iOS 26, protected by a Screen Time passcode you don't know. Block tiktok.com in Safari too. TikTok's own daily limit helps, and under-18 accounts get a 60-minute limit by default, but you can get past it with a passcode.
- TikTok sets a 60-minute daily screen time limit by default on accounts under 18. To keep watching, teens have to enter a passcode.
- For under-13s, a parent has to set or enter a passcode to allow 30 more minutes.
- TikTok announced in November 2025 that its screen time tools would move to a settings area called Time and Well-being.
- Deleting TikTok is quick to undo: the App Store keeps it in your purchase history, and tiktok.com still works in Safari.
- Apple says Screen Time limits can be ignored by default. A passcode held by someone else is what makes a block stick.
Blocking TikTok is easy. Keeping it blocked on a Tuesday night when you’re bored is the hard part. Blocks tend to leak in three places: a limit you can dismiss, an app you can reinstall in seconds, and a website nobody remembered to block. This guide closes all three.
How do you block TikTok on iPhone?
You block TikTok on iPhone with Screen Time, Apple’s built-in controls, and then protect the block with a passcode you don’t know. TikTok’s own limits are a useful first layer, but you control them from inside the app you’re trying to avoid. In order of strength:
- TikTok’s daily screen time limit, set inside the app.
- A Screen Time limit or schedule on the TikTok app, with tiktok.com blocked in Safari.
- A Screen Time passcode that someone else holds.
- A lock that costs a walk, if you want TikTok available but not on autopilot.
Deleting the app is on the list people try first. It comes with a catch, covered below.
What screen time limits does TikTok have built in?
TikTok has a daily screen time limit, an optional passcode to get past it, and Sleep Hours for the evening. In November 2025, TikTok announced a Time and Well-being space in its settings to replace its older screen time management page.
To set it up, open your profile, tap the menu at the top right to reach TikTok’s settings, and look for Time and Well-being. Set a daily screen time limit there. TikTok changes its menus often, so if you don’t see it, search the settings for “screen time”.
The weak spot: on your own account, you pick the passcode. When the limit runs out you type in a code you already know and keep watching. It adds a pause, and a pause does help some people. It doesn’t stop anyone who has decided to keep scrolling.
What are TikTok’s screen time defaults for teens?
Since March 2023, TikTok has set a 60-minute daily screen time limit by default on every account belonging to someone under 18. When the hour is up, TikTok prompts the teen for a passcode to keep watching, so carrying on takes an active decision. For under-13s, a parent or guardian has to set or enter a passcode to allow 30 more minutes.
Parents who link accounts through Family Pairing can set the limit from their own phone, give different days different limits, and keep the passcode themselves.
Those defaults reach a lot of teens: Pew Research Center found in 2024 that 16% of US teens say they’re on TikTok almost constantly.
How do you block TikTok with iPhone Screen Time?
iPhone Screen Time blocks TikTok from outside the app, which is why it holds up better than TikTok’s own settings. The menus changed in iOS 27.
On iOS 27
Apple’s iOS 27 guide gives you two tools:
- Time Allowances cap how long you can use a category of apps each day. Go to Settings > Screen Time > Time Allowances, tap Manage Categories, add the category TikTok is in (tap a category to see the apps in it), then set the time with the slider.
- Screen Time Schedule decides when categories are available. Go to Settings > Screen Time > Screen Time Schedule, turn on Schedule, tap Add Schedule, pick days, then tap a time window and choose which Time Allowance categories it allows. Leave TikTok’s category out of the windows where you want it gone, such as work hours or after 10 PM.
Both work on categories, not single apps, so whatever else shares TikTok’s category gets the same treatment. Apple also says the new features need iOS 27 on all your Apple devices.
On iOS 26
On iOS 26 you can limit TikTok on its own and block it for set hours:
- App Limits: Settings > Screen Time > App Limits > Add Limit. Tap a category to see its apps, select TikTok, tap Next and set the time.
- Downtime: Settings > Screen Time > Downtime > Scheduled, then set the hours. Apple sends a 5-minute reminder before it starts.
- Block at Downtime: with a Screen Time passcode set, turn this on under Downtime. Apple says restricted apps then “can’t be opened during downtime” and appear dimmed with an hourglass icon.
The passcode is the part that makes it stick
Apple’s iOS 26 guide says: “By default, Screen Time limits can be ignored once reached.” Set a four-digit Screen Time passcode at Settings > Screen Time > Passcode & Management > Lock Screen Time Settings on iOS 27, or Settings > Screen Time, then scroll down to Lock Screen Time Settings, on iOS 26. Let a partner, flatmate or friend type it in. If you choose it yourself, you’re back to TikTok’s own problem: a lock whose key you carry. We cover the “one more minute” habit in why Screen Time’s limit never sticks.
Should you delete TikTok or just block it?
Blocking TikTok usually lasts longer than deleting it, because a deleted app is one search away. Apple’s own guide to deleting apps shows how quick the way back is: any app you’ve downloaded before sits in Apps & Purchase History in the App Store, ready to reinstall. And tiktok.com still plays videos in Safari.
To delete it anyway: touch and hold TikTok on the Home Screen, tap Remove App, then Delete App, then Delete. Your account isn’t touched. To make reinstalling harder on iOS 26, Apple lets you restrict store purchases and redownloads under Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > iTunes & App Store Purchases (Apple), protected by your Screen Time passcode.
The research on going cold turkey is mixed. In a 2025 randomized study in PNAS Nexus, two weeks without mobile internet improved well-being and attention, but only about a quarter of participants kept the block on as agreed. In a German study of about 600 people in the Journal of Experimental Psychology: Applied, cutting phone use by one hour a day worked about as well as quitting, and its benefits held up better four months later. A limit you’ll keep beats a ban you’ll undo by Friday.
How do you stop tiktok.com from being a back door?
tiktok.com works in Safari, so any TikTok block needs the website blocked too. On iOS 27, Apple says a Time Allowance also covers an app’s associated website if the app declares one. Apple doesn’t list which apps do, so check: when your allowance is used up, open tiktok.com and see whether it loads.
On iOS 26, block the site directly:
- Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions, and turn it on.
- Tap App Store, Media, Web, & Games, then Web Content.
- Choose Limit Adult Websites, tap Add Website under Never Allow, and enter tiktok.com.
Apple’s iOS 27 guide doesn’t yet list steps for blocking a single website. If tiktok.com still opens after your allowance runs out, check Content & Privacy Restrictions in Screen Time.
Can you make TikTok cost a walk instead of a passcode?
Yes. StepGate locks TikTok until you hit a daily step goal, and then every app you locked opens for the rest of the day. It suits people who don’t want a total ban and don’t have anyone to hold a passcode, but who know a dismissible limit won’t hold.
You choose TikTok in Apple’s own Screen Time picker, and you can add tiktok.com and whole categories in the same place. StepGate can’t see what you picked; Apple hands it an opaque token. Pick a goal from 3,000 to 15,000 steps. Steps come from Apple Health and your iPhone’s motion sensor.
Open TikTok before you’ve walked and the lock screen says “TikTok is locked.” with what’s left as a walk, such as “A 15-minute walk”, and one button: Go walk. Steps before scrolling.
StepGate is not a vault, and we don’t pretend it is. You can pause it for 5, 10, 15 or 30 minutes (it re-locks on its own), keep rest days (Sunday by default), and set lock hours (6:00 AM to 9:00 PM by default). Each of those is a deliberate choice, not a reflex tap. How it works has the details. It requires a StepGate Plus subscription and an iPhone on iOS 17 or later.
Which TikTok block is hardest to get around?
| Method | How hard to get past | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| TikTok daily limit (your own passcode) | Very easy: you know the code | You set it inside the app you’re avoiding |
| Deleting the app | Easy: reinstall from purchase history | tiktok.com still works |
| Screen Time limit, no passcode | Easy: limits can be ignored by default | Category-wide on iOS 27 |
| Screen Time with someone else’s passcode | Hard | Needs another person each time |
| StepGate walk-to-unlock | Medium: pause, rest day, lower goal | A subscription and a daily walk |
Make it stick
Start with a Screen Time limit and the website block, then hand the passcode to someone else. If you’d rather earn TikTok than ask for it, put a walk in front of it. Reels are next door, so the same setup for Instagram is in how to limit Instagram on iPhone. Want to work out what your daily scroll would be in steps? Try the screen time to steps calculator.
Questions people ask
Can you put a passcode on TikTok?
Yes. TikTok's daily screen time limit can ask for a passcode before you keep watching. On your own account you set that passcode, so it slows you down rather than stopping you. For a real lock, use an iPhone Screen Time passcode that someone else keeps.
Why does TikTok stop teens after an hour?
Since March 2023, TikTok has given every account under 18 a 60-minute daily screen time limit by default. When it runs out, teens enter a passcode to keep watching, so carrying on is an active choice. Parents using Family Pairing can set different limits and keep the passcode.
Does deleting TikTok delete my account?
No. Deleting the app removes it and its data from your iPhone, but your TikTok account stays, and you can reinstall the app from your App Store purchase history at any time.
Can StepGate block TikTok in Safari as well as the app?
Yes. StepGate uses Apple's own Screen Time picker, which lets you pick apps, whole categories and websites, so you can lock the TikTok app and tiktok.com together.
Does blocking TikTok on my iPhone block it on my iPad?
On iOS 27, turn on Share Across Devices in Settings > Screen Time > Manage Screen Time. Apple says your schedules and Time Allowances then apply on your iPhone, iPad and Mac.
