Walking Minutes to Steps Calculator

Enter how long you walked (or plan to) and how fast. You get steps, a rough distance and a rough calorie estimate, with the working shown.

Short answer

At about 100 steps a minute, the rough threshold for moderate-intensity walking, a 30-minute walk is about 3,000 steps and an hour is about 6,000. An easy stroll at 80 steps a minute gives about 2,400 steps in 30 minutes, and a brisk 130 steps a minute about 3,900.

How we calculate this

Steps = minutes × cadence (steps a minute)

Then distance = steps × 0.762 m, and calories = METs × body weight (kg) × hours. So 30 minutes at 100 steps a minute is 3,000 steps, about 2.3 km (1.4 miles), and for a 70 kg (154 lb) adult about 3.0 × 70 × 0.5 = 105 kcal.

  • Moderate, 100 steps a minute. A 2018 review of 38 studies found about 100 steps a minute is a consistent rule of thumb for absolutely defined moderate intensity (3 METs) in adults. An earlier review put 30 minutes at that pace at a minimum of about 3,000 steps. The CDC's 150 minutes a week of moderate activity works out to about 15,000 steps a week at this pace, on top of your usual steps.
  • Brisk, 130 steps a minute. Healthy adults walking outdoors averaged about 127 steps a minute at a fast pace and about 117 at their usual pace (Murtagh et al., 2021). Relative to their own fitness, adults in their 30s reached vigorous effort at around 130 (CADENCE-Adults, 2021). We use 4.8 METs, the Compendium value for brisk walking at 3.5 to 3.9 mph, which matches that fast-pace speed of about 3.8 mph.
  • Easy stroll, 80 steps a minute. This one is our own illustrative value for a slow walk, not a research threshold. We pair it with 2.3 METs, the Compendium value for strolling under 2 mph, close to the 1.8 mph slow-pace average in the same outdoor studies.
  • Calories are rough. MET values are averages for adults aged 19 to 59, and 1 MET is treated as about 1 kcal per kg per hour. Your real burn depends on body size, fitness, terrain and more. Subtract 1 MET if you want calories above resting.
  • Distance uses one step length. 0.762 m is StepGate's own fallback estimate. Slow walkers take shorter steps and fast walkers longer ones, so use the steps to miles calculator if distance matters to you.

Questions people ask

How many steps is a 30-minute walk?
About 3,000 steps at a moderate 100 steps a minute, in line with the research rule of thumb that a brisk 30-minute walk is roughly 3,000 steps or more. At 130 steps a minute it is about 3,900, and at an easy 80 about 2,400.
How long does it take to walk 10,000 steps?
About 1 hour 40 minutes at 100 steps a minute, or about 1 hour 17 minutes at a brisk 130. Steps from the rest of your day count too, so it is rarely one long walk.
What counts as a brisk walk?
About 100 steps a minute is the usual threshold for moderate-intensity walking, and the CDC describes brisk walking as 2.5 mph or faster, where you can talk but not sing. For it to feel moderately hard relative to your own fitness, younger adults may need about 115 to 120 steps a minute.
How do I find my walking cadence?
Walk at your normal pace, count your steps for 15 seconds and multiply by 4. Counting for a full minute is more accurate. Many fitness watches also show cadence during a walk.
How many calories does walking burn?
Roughly 30 to 45 calories per 1,000 steps for a 70 kg (154 lb) adult, depending on pace and body size. The calculator uses standard MET values, so treat its number as an estimate, not a measurement.
