Screen Time to Steps Calculator

Type in your daily screen time and how much of it you would trade for a walk. You get steps, distance, and what that adds up to over a week and a year.

Short answer

At a moderate walking pace of about 100 steps a minute, 1 hour of screen time is about 6,000 steps, or roughly 2.8 miles (4.6 km). Swapping a quarter of the 3 h 46 min that adult internet users spend online on mobile each day (DataReportal, 2025) comes to about 5,650 steps a day.

25% of the default is about an hour. 100% means every scrolling minute becomes a walking minute.

For scale: 7,000 steps a day, the level a 2025 review in The Lancet Public Health linked to substantially lower risk of early death than about 2,000 steps, is about 70 minutes of walking at this pace. Those are associations, and your normal day already counts toward it.

How we calculate this

Steps a day = daily screen time (minutes) × share you swap × cadence (steps a minute)

Then distance = steps × 0.762 m, a week = 7 days and a year = 365 days. Steps are rounded to the nearest 10.

  • Cadence of 100 steps a minute. A 2018 review in the British Journal of Sports Medicine found that about 100 steps a minute is a consistent rule of thumb for moderate-intensity walking in adults. It's a floor, and people vary. Healthy adults walking outdoors at their usual pace average about 117 steps a minute, and about 127 at a fast pace (Murtagh et al., 2021), which is why the brisk option uses 130. The 80 steps a minute "easy stroll" option is our own illustrative value for a slow walk, not a research threshold.
  • Step length of 0.762 m (2.5 ft). This is the estimate StepGate uses when Apple Health has no distance for you. Real step length depends on your height and pace, so treat distances as rough. The steps to miles calculator lets you change it.
  • The default screen time. 3 h 46 min is the average daily time adult internet users spend online on mobile in DataReportal's Digital 2025 report (survey data from GWI). It measures time online, not iPhone Screen Time, so your own number may be higher or lower.
  • The 7,000-step line. A 2025 review of 57 studies in The Lancet Public Health found people walking about 7,000 steps a day had substantially lower risk of early death, heart disease and dementia than people walking about 2,000. These are associations, not proof that the steps caused the difference.

What this can't tell you: whether a swapped minute is worth more than a scrolled one to you. It just puts both in the same unit.

Questions people ask

How many steps is 1 hour of screen time?
About 6,000 steps, if you spent that hour walking at a moderate 100 steps a minute. At a brisk 130 steps a minute it would be about 7,800 steps, and at an easy 80 steps a minute about 4,800.
Why 100 steps a minute?
A 2018 review of 38 studies by Tudor-Locke and colleagues found that about 100 steps a minute is a consistent marker of moderate-intensity walking for adults. Healthy adults walking outdoors at their usual pace average closer to 117 steps a minute, so 100 is a conservative pace.
How much screen time does the average person have?
DataReportal's Digital 2025 report puts adult internet users at 6 hours 38 minutes online a day, with 3 hours 46 minutes of that on mobile. Those are survey figures. Your own daily average is under Settings > Screen Time on your iPhone.
How many minutes of walking is 7,000 steps?
About 70 minutes at 100 steps a minute, or about 54 minutes at a brisk 130. Your normal day already includes some steps (healthy adults typically log somewhere between 4,000 and 18,000 a day), so the extra walk you need is usually shorter.
Does StepGate use the same math?
Yes. When an app is locked, StepGate shows the steps you have left as a walk at 100 steps a minute, so 1,500 steps to go reads as "a 15-minute walk".
