Steps to Miles Calculator (and Km)

Turn a step count into miles or kilometres, or a distance into steps. Pick a pace or enter your own step length if you know it.

Short answer

At a 0.762 m (2.5 ft) step, the estimate StepGate uses when Apple Health has no distance, 10,000 steps is about 4.7 miles (7.6 km) and a mile is about 2,110 steps. Research averages for outdoor walking put a mile at about 2,390 steps at a usual pace and about 1,980 at a fast pace.

An estimate. Your iPhone measures walking distance itself when you carry it, and StepGate shows that number when Apple Health has one.

How we calculate this

Distance = steps × step length. Steps = distance ÷ step length.

1 mile is 1,609.344 m. So with a 0.762 m step, a mile is 1,609.344 ÷ 0.762 ≈ 2,112 steps, and 10,000 steps is 7,620 m, or 4.73 miles.

  • The 0.762 m default. It's 2.5 ft, the estimate StepGate itself uses when Apple Health has no distance for you. It isn't a research average.
  • Usual and fast pace. A 2021 meta-analysis of 35 studies (14,015 healthy adults walking outdoors) found a mean speed of 1.31 m/s at usual pace with about 117 steps a minute, and 1.72 m/s at fast pace with about 127. Dividing speed by cadence gives a step of about 0.67 m (about 2,390 steps a mile) and about 0.81 m (about 1,980 steps a mile). That's our derivation, and an approximation: the speed and cadence averages come from partly different groups of studies.
  • The "2,000 steps a mile" rule. It's commonly quoted and sits inside the range above, but we couldn't find an open primary source for that exact figure, so we don't lean on it.
  • Height. Height-based rules of thumb for step length are widely repeated, but we couldn't check one against a primary source we trust, so the calculator asks for your step length instead. Measuring it takes two minutes (see the questions below).
  • Your step count itself varies by device. A 2026 analysis of 59 studies found wrist-worn research devices counted 15 to 30% more steps than hip-worn ones, so the same walk can give different totals.

Questions people ask

How many steps are in a mile?
Roughly 2,000 to 2,400 for most adults walking. Research averages for outdoor walking work out to about 2,390 steps a mile at a usual pace and about 1,980 at a fast pace. With the 0.762 m step StepGate uses as a fallback, it is about 2,110.
How many miles is 10,000 steps?
About 4.7 miles (7.6 km) with a 0.762 m step. With the shorter usual-pace step of about 0.67 m it is closer to 4.2 miles (6.7 km), and with a fast-pace step of about 0.81 m about 5.1 miles (8.1 km).
How many steps are in a kilometre?
About 1,310 with a 0.762 m step, about 1,480 at a usual walking pace and about 1,230 at a fast pace.
Why do faster walkers take fewer steps per mile?
Speeding up lengthens each step as well as quickening it. In the outdoor walking studies pooled by Murtagh and colleagues in 2021, going from usual to fast pace raised cadence by only about 10 steps a minute while speed rose by about a third, so each step covered more ground.
How do I measure my own step length?
Walk a measured distance at your normal pace (a 400 m running-track lap works), count your steps, and divide the distance by the steps. 400 m in 540 steps is a step of about 0.74 m, or 74 cm. Enter that under "My own step length".
