Privacy Policy
No account, no ads, no tracking. Here is exactly what StepGate reads, what it sends, and what stays on your phone.
Last updated October 28, 2026

The short version
- StepGate has no accounts, no ads and no cross-app tracking.
- Your app choices never leave your phone. Apple's Screen Time picker gives StepGate private tokens, so StepGate can't even see which apps you chose.
- Your Health records stay on your phone. StepGate reads them to run the lock and draw your charts, and never writes to Health. The only step numbers that leave your phone are the few listed below.
- StepGate sends anonymous usage analytics (to PostHog) and subscription data (to Superwall and Apple). Some of these events include your daily goal and simple numbers about your steps, as listed below. None of it is linked to your name or identity, and none of it is used for advertising.
What StepGate accesses on your iPhone, and why
Apple Health and Motion & Fitness (read-only). StepGate reads your step count, walking and running distance, active energy, exercise time and workouts, plus your iPhone's pedometer. It uses them to know when you've hit your goal, and to show your progress, streaks, trends and the walks other apps saved to Health. StepGate never writes to Health. Health data is never used for advertising and is never sold.
Screen Time (Family Controls). When you choose apps, categories or websites to lock, iOS gives StepGate opaque tokens instead of names. The lock itself is applied on your iPhone by Apple's ManagedSettings framework. StepGate uses individual authorization: you managing your own phone. It is not a parental-control service.
Notifications. Only if you allow them. Reminders and goal alerts are created on your phone.
The profile you enter during setup (such as your name, height, weight and age) stays on your phone and is never sent anywhere.
What StepGate sends, and to whom
Anonymous usage analytics (PostHog)
To learn which parts of the app help people and where they get stuck, StepGate sends product events to PostHog (US servers) under a random identifier created on your phone. We never attach your name, email or Apple ID, and session recording is off. Events include:
- App opens, screens viewed, setup steps completed, and whether you allowed each permission.
- Settings you choose, such as your daily step goal, the number of apps you lock, your rest days, your lock hours and how long you pause the lock.
- Moments like hitting your goal, including the step count at that moment.
- Answers to setup questions, such as your activity level, your rough daily screen time, what you want to change and how you heard about StepGate.
- Basic device information (app version, iOS version, device model, language).
This is "Usage Data" and a "Device ID" in App Store terms, collected for analytics and not linked to you. PostHog's privacy policy is at posthog.com/privacy.
Subscriptions (Apple and Superwall)
StepGate Plus is billed by Apple under Apple's privacy policy. StepGate never sees your payment details. To show the subscription screen and know whether Plus is active, StepGate uses the Superwall SDK, which sends purchase history (for example, subscribed or expired), basic device information (a random identifier, app and iOS version, device model, language, time zone, and a country derived from your IP address) and a few details used to personalise that screen: your step goal, your average daily steps, the number of apps you lock, your rough daily screen time and how you heard about StepGate. This is "Purchases" data collected for app functionality and analytics, not linked to you. Superwall's policy is at superwall.com/privacy.
This website
This website uses PostHog to count visits without cookies or local storage: which pages are viewed, roughly where a visit came from (for example a search engine or an AI assistant), and clicks on the App Store buttons. Nothing is stored on your device, and nothing is linked to you.
What StepGate never does
- Sell your data, or share it for advertising.
- Use an advertising identifier or track you across other apps and websites.
- Send your app choices, your profile, or your raw Health history anywhere.
Where your data lives, and how to delete it
Your settings, goals, streak data and locked-app selection are stored on your iPhone, in a container StepGate's widgets and Screen Time extensions can read. Deleting StepGate deletes them. You can turn off Health access in the Health app and Screen Time access in Settings at any time. Because analytics are anonymous, we can't look up your events by name. If you'd like analytics from your device deleted, email us and we'll do what we can to find and remove them.
Children
StepGate is a self-control tool for people managing their own phone. It is not a parental-control or child-monitoring product, and it is not directed at children.
Changes to this policy
If StepGate changes how it handles data, we'll update this page first and change the date at the top.
